The Three Most Common Laptop Problems

Your laptop is your way of working on the go it allows you to work anywhere at any time

. But like every other piece of technology out there, your precious portable powerhouse is not indestructible. It will be prone to faults and will from time to time need professional laptop repair services.

After years servicing laptops of all makes and sizes, IT Grade has realised that there are four fairly common problems faced by laptop users. To ensure you are well prepared to face the worst, we decided to outline these problems and how best to handle them:

Hard Drive Failure - This is the most common laptop fault we fix; the trick is that most the symptoms match those of other problems, so neither you nor we can afford to jump to any conclusions. Sometimes the laptop boots fine but everything runs very slow. Other times the boot device is not recognised when the laptop is powered on. Sometimes the hard drive makes unusual and noticeable sounds such as ticking or grinding noises.

To generally avoid this a) be careful how you carry your laptop and b) regularly run disk clean up and defragmentation tools. It is also a good idea to invest in an external hard drive, to minimise the workload placed on your laptops built-in drive.

Screen Problems The next most common problem we encounter relates to issues with display quality. A laptop screen that does not display anything or is very faint once the laptop is booted can be caused by the backlight in the screen failing or the inverter (small circuit board that controls the backlight) failing.

Sometimes screens display multi-coloured horizontal or vertical lines, have problems displaying certain colours, displaying pixelated images or flicker on and off when the laptop lid is moved. To avoid these sort of problems, make sure again to a) be careful how you carry your laptop and b) only use proper screen cleaning products when the screen is at all dirty.

Blue Screen of Death This a problem that isnt exclusive to laptops in any sense but can tend to happen far earlier or more often than it does with desktops. Quite often caused by a faulty RAM chip, it is possible to check yourself if you have a bad RAM chip by swapping it for a known good chip or by removing one chip at a time if you have more than one. As with the hard drive failure, this can be avoided by taking better care of the laptop and can also be alleviated by rebooting your operating system.

If problems persist or get out of hand, do not attempt any further action (it could permanently damage your laptop or void its warranty!) give IT Grade a call on (03) 9017 1133.
