This will leave behind black, simple gemstone. Today, some use a less permanent kind of dying. Although they are not at all a hassle to do, it doesn't really last that well. It involves a cobalt solution, in which the stones are immersed then heated.

Because of the nature of black onyx jewelry, you should always separate pieces from each other so that they are not scratched. Also, you should not soak the black onyx in water or any other liquid for that matter. This might cause the dye on the onyx jewelry to leak and you don't want the colour of the onyx jewelry to fade away. If there are scratches, you can buff that out using jewelry polish and a cloth.
