It still amazes me just how relevant the techniques used by advertisers and marketers 100 years ago still are today

. Here we are in the 21st Century. We live in a world that is in constant motion, trying to deal with a marketplace that is changing at an increasingly faster pace.

In the last 10 to 15 years there has been a revolution in how we get, and give, information, how we shop and how we communicate. And yet, we forget the most important truth of all is something that NEVER changes. What is it?

Human nature. That remains the same, just as it always has since the beginning of time. Early Man was just as interested in a faster, easier way to get his work done as Modern Man is today. The Caveman would've fallen for a Billy Mays pitch just as easily as the present-day couch dweller.

Humans have always sought out ways to make themselves more attractive, stronger, smarter and richer and they continue to do so today. What does that mean to you as a marketer?


The Marketing Angle No Customer Can Resist

It means that you will always be on the right track if you do one thing. You must put your message in terms of what it will do for the customer. You have to create a direct appeal to your audience that says If you buy from us, you will have/be more.'. Prospective customers and clients have to be given plain, clear-cut statements on that greatest of allures, What's In It For Me?

You cannot lie or make things up. That is not what we're talking about. The benefits have to be true and realistic. What we're saying is that they must be made vivid and memorable so they reach that deepest part of the customer's psyche. Don't say that what you sell is a time-saving device. Tell them instead that they'll have more time out on the golf course, enjoying the smells of a freshly cut fairway thanks to this product.

Talk in the customer's terms and perspective and you'll be ahead of most of your competition. Imagine what they're looking for and how your service or product plays into that desire. Then build a living, breathing picture they can taste, smell and touch.

When businesses only talk about themselves in the marketing and advertising, usually they're the only ones who enjoy reading it. Your customers pay your salary. You owe it to them to give them something they want to hear about.
