In ever so many ways it is becoming more apparent by the day that world equilibrium is rapidly reaching a crucial tipping point. Everywhere we look there is a crisis with the potential to impact the world in a major way. From the onging environmental catastrophe in the Gulf, despite the trillions thrown into the banking system the entire financial system is still teetering on collapse; meanwhile the US and Israel are engaged in the biggest military deployment since WWII with the intent of launching a nuclear strike on Iran. This is the reality of the Summer of 2010.
The ultimate crisis will not be brought on by a singular event though. It will be the result of the accumulation of many things over a long period of time. But primarily human greed, arrogance and sheer stupidity are reaching critical mass. Everywhere you look the difficulties facing civilization have the same underlying cause: greed, arrogance and ignorance.
Take the British Petroleum oil well blowout for example. Already one of the most profitable companies in the history of the world, but driven by the unrelenting demand of "the market" for greater and greater profits, the corporation developed a mentality of profits-above-all-else. Decisions were increasingly made with the short term in mind. The worth of the lives of BP workers in the field were calculated in terms of how much it would cost to bury them against how much it would cost to protect them from injury or death.
That is not to say that British Petroleum is the only company to exploit workers and show callous disregard for human life and all else but their own enrichment, they are not. It is just that their greed and arrogance is now in full public display.
But the U.S. government bears much of the blame as well. Why, for example, would the government allow a private company that caused the disaster in the first place to remain in charge of the efforts to try to stem the catastrophe they created? That is stupid!
Presumably, the government is supposed to protect the interest of the people. Regulatory agencies are there to at least try to keep corporate greed under control. As is evident, though, in the recent financial crash as well as the out-of-control gusher in the Gulf, government agencies that used to regulate Wall Street and the oil industry have been seriously compromised and corrupted. Just consider, for instance, it is well known that former execs from Goldman Sachs and British Petroleum are now in government positions that are supposed to regulate the very businesses they represent. Conflict of interests is putting it politely.
And the people who are supposed to hold their leaders responsible are too fat and stupid themselves to any longer effectively hold their own government accountable. John Lennon once sang: "They keep you doped with the religion, sex and TV. And you think you're so clever and classless and free." How true.
For the most part "government by the people and for the people" is over if it ever existed. The situation now is such that supranational banks and corporations have grown so big they have become more powerful than national governments; all the while fomenting clamor among the ignorant masses that Big government is the real cause of all the world's problems. Hence, the tipping point when private financial interests gain absolute control of government for their own ends (otherwise known as fascism).
A Bible prophet long ago put his finger on the problem when he said to God: "I well know, O Jehovah, that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step."
How true. While having the capacity to acquire knowledge and wisdom, the civilization that humans have collectively brought into existence betrays an utter and profound lack of wisdom. After so many centuries of striving and so much effort to develop a just society for all, in view of the abject failure of civilization to achieve such, the only sensible conclusion to draw is that man lacks the ability to successfully self-govern.
Don't get me wrong. What humanity needs is not more religion heaven help us no, what mankind needs is God's kingdom. According to the Bible God's kingdom is a government just like human kingdoms are governments. It will replace all human governments, corporations and religious institutions and rule the earth forever. It will put an end to war, poverty and oppression of all kinds and uplift mankind out of its decrepit condition.
Jehovah long ago foresaw the end of humankind's disastrous attempt at ruling itself independently of God. Although the immediate future is not bright it will be as if the lights suddenly go out for the entire world, initiating a period of time Jesus referred to as "the conclusion of the system" the good news is, that, while the last human kingdom is destined by prophecy to hold mankind hostage to a nuclear holocaust, God's powerful kingdom will take complete control of all earth's affairs and sweep the remnants of this dying civilization into the dustbin of history.
To that end I say: "Let your kingdom come!" Can I get an "Amen"?
