The Tooth Fairy And John Lennons Tooth
The Tooth Fairy is not an equal opportunity fairy
, it seems. When kids lose their teeth, how much does that get them?
That depends on where you live. A random search shows that kids get a dollar or two in most parts of the country. In Manhattan and New Jersey, the tooth fairy seems to feel more generous, and gives five dollars for the first tooth. Some American kids get a collectible Sacagawea dollar; they are also called golden dollars even though they are not made of gold.
If your kids take the time to write a polite note to the Tooth Fairy, they sometimes get a couple of dollars with a note explaining that the first time is special and next teeth may not get the same bounty.
Anyway, Tooth Fairy could not afford John Lennon's tooth, which he had given to his housekeeper in the 1960s, was sold at an auction in the UK at 19,500 (around USD31,000) recently.
In her blog, the Tooth Fairy says she has to collect around 300,000 teeth every night from kids around the world. And all of them are from kids. And in most parts of the world, and definitely in the US, the Tooth Fairy has to make a payment when collecting teeth. Kids expect it. So, because the world economy is not doing too well, lots of people do not have jobs that pay well or are unemployed, they are short of money. And Tooth Fairy, though busy and employed does not feel great splurging on things. Plus, John Lennon was an adult and a famous member of the Beatles when he lost the tooth. So the Tooth Fairy decided to let his tooth go. One has to have priorities, you know.
Instead, a Canadian
dentist called Michael Zuk bought the tooth. He seems thrilled with his acquisition. Mr. Zuk knows what he is doing because he has actually written a book about celebrities and their teeth. The name of the book is: Confessions of a Former Cosmetic Dentist.
Regarding John Lennon's tooth, he was quoted in the papers as saying "Once I heard it was up for sale I had to have it."
What does he plan to do with John Lennon's tooth? Mr. Zuk says he will display the tooth in his surgery. He will also take in on a tour to other dental surgeries and to dental schools.
That brings us to another more relevant question: What does the Tooth Fairy do with all the teeth she collects all night, every night?
The Tooth Fairy answers this question in her blog: "I use the teeth I collect to make everything for me and my helpers," says she. "These items range from chairs to cars to the computer I am using to write this blog. We need teeth to create new items and repair old items, so I must collect many teeth every night to keep up with everything we need."
Do visit her blog, you will find it interesting. Tooth fairy apparently pays more for teeth without cavities. Obviously. So if kids want to earn the full value of their teeth from the Tooth Fairy, they need to look after them. There in her blog for a nice song about tooth care which you can sing with kids.
Keep smiling!
