Using Public Transportation in Amsterdam

Using Public Transportation in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has easy to use facilities even for visiting tourists which are evident in its public transportation, quite commendable as it gives tourists a chance to be self-sufficient on the trip. Even before your trip to Amsterdam, you can already check out the various routes easily with their interactive map found at their online official website. The map provides a practical guide in getting around every stop in Amsterdam and even advises which route is the fastest one to take, and which public transport is available to get there. Arriva is a public transportation service that provides a convenient route going to major parts of the city via buses, trains, taxis or coaches. For those who want a guide, try Oostenrijk Touringcars which is a combination of a tour guide and custom travel in one. But for those who need the luxury of controlling their own time, one can also opt to use their own transportation by renting a car, bicycle, a scooter and different sizes of boats.

Why Amsterdams Centrum is Worth the Visit

Centrum, apt to its name, has everything Amsterdam has to bring tourists centralized in one area. Theres the Royal Palace of Amsterdam where Queen Beatrix of Netherlands lives occasionally, rotating around her four homes found around Netherlands. The palace is again open to visitors since early last year, so one can visit the central hall where loyalty constantly walks. Theres also Bloemenmarkt, considered as the worlds only floating flower market. Tourists will also love the different souvenirs found at the market for affordable rates. Then of course, theres the Van Gogh Museum where the largest collection of the Dutch Painters works are found. Aside from the main museum, Centrum also has many museums hidden in its canals, small museums which are kept by private residences and other small organizations also worth the visit. There is also Anne Franks House down the famous Prisengracht 263 which marks the secret room where she hid with her family. Centrum has so many shops and restaurants to stop by in along the way, so be sure to bring lots of pocket money and a ravenous stomach along the way.

Escaping for a day at the City of Alkmaar

Alkmaar is an ideal place to spend a day tour in as its only a few kilometers off of Amsterdam proper. Alkmaar, considered as the cheese capital of Holland, has something to offer everyone aside from cheese but of course they have plenty of that too. More than cheese, they also have many historical museums worth the visit such as the City Museum of Alkmaar, the National Beer Museum, a Beatles Museum since John Lennons first guitar was apparently made here, and of course, the Holland Cheese Museum. The cheese market in Waagplein cant be found on any other day but Friday. The market is open every Friday from April to September, during which different cheeses are weighed for spectators. The buying isnt done in the actual market though but at the different stalls surrounding the market with different specialized cheeses for sale to individuals. There are also many unique boutiques, shops and cafes which arent found in the more tourist-laden gift shops of Amsterdam. And after all that shopping, relax in their airy terraces and restaurants, and people-watch.

The Different Museum Stops in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has one of the largest collection of museums, so careful are they to preserve their culture which blends so many types of history from different perspectives. It actually depends on which ones you want to prioritize most, whether it is art, science, architecture, history or local culture. For arts sake, theres the Rembrandthuis (House of Rembrandt) and the Van Gogh Museum, each offering an in-depth look at these artists and their works, and how it influenced Dutch culture in general. For those who are into more contemporary art, visit the Foam Photography Museum or the Netherlands Media Art, as well as ARCAM or the Amsterdam Centre for Architecture for a look at futuristic design. The Dutch Resistance Museum which records all the efforts of the Resistance during the second World War, as well as their Historical Museum is located here too. For fashionistas out there, theres always the Museum of Bags and Purses which chronicles the different bags from the Middle Ages. There are plenty more to choose from, and each one is an interesting site to behold for those searching for an educational excursion in the city.
