There used to be a time when arcades were the "it" thing for kids and adults alike. But not anymore ever since the popularity of free games. There are tons of genres that cater not only to single player but also multiplayer. As these kinds of games continuously increase in number, so do the gamers who wish to see for themselves if they are really worth trying and keeping. Even competitive gaming is developing a rather strong following. In fact, there are more than a few titles here and there that stick out and make an impression.

The descendant of the well-liked "Half Life" shooter Counterstrike is earning more and more followers. True that its impact does not quite compare with its precursor, particularly outside the US and Europe, but still it is not one to be put aside. The developers have made some alterations for the better and now the gameplay has more depth and options that the previous versions lacked. No wonder LoL is on the lead right now, even displacing DoTa in almost all important tournaments.

"Counter-Strike" still holds the title as the most widely popular competitive FPS on the market. It managed to evolve into a bigger hit that the game it was coded on, hence its continuous success in various free games competitions, even outliving other big names such as "Unreal Tournament" and "Quake 3," not to mention an endless list of FPS titles that have been released since. There have been plenty of updates, but the core of the game remains as is. This, according to many, is actually the thing that makes it so engaging to play.

To say that the first installment of Half Life 2 was highly anticipated before its release is an understatement. Fans waited for over a decade but it paid off. The game has eventually taken the place of the original as the go-to title for strategy players of competitive free games. But that is not the end of it. The game has been perpetually balanced and re-balanced by Blizzard Entertainment, offering answers and counter-answers to anything that any given faction in the game has to give. The final outcomes is a much more complicated yet charming version of chess. At present, plenty of depth strategies are still being discovered for the game itself and the meta-game. Who knows how long that would take. Another decade? God forbid longer. But so far, everybody is patient and optimistic.

"Street Fighter IV" is becoming an outstanding choice for free games that go one-on-one. Of course, that is all thanks to an online component and a rapidly-developing meta-game discovering how well-balanced it is. This much-awaited addition to the classic fighting game franchise turns out to be way better than its ancestor. For one, the classic cast of "Street Fighter II" has made their come back. Even better, it still is rooted to the series' original complex move interactions and tactical fighting. But it's still got a long way. Whether or not it can displace Namco's "Tekken 6," only time can really tell.
