The Tower of the Mint closed the walls of Florence to the Arno to the east, so we can speak of "Terminal Tower". Today is isolated in the middle of a road junction of the avenues leading to the eponymous ring Lungarno della Zecca Vecchia. The Mint once was also close to the Palazzo Vecchio, where water was used from the Scheraggio stream that ran along the present Via della Ninna (see Church of San Pier Scheraggio). Before the demolition of the last nineteenth-century circuit of walls (that of 1282-1333), the tower stands amid the remains of a fortress dismantled, also in this area were numerous mills and other buildings with gore. Formerly in the vicinity was the real opening of the walls, the secondary gate of Justice, so called because through it passed people sentenced to death, the reach the gallows, situated outside the walls near the Tower Mint. Today the tower is simple and massive, with some small holes and without battlements. There is a rooftop terrace, which boasts a beautiful landscape. To reach it you must climb some narrow stone steps, this is not accessible to the public today. Inside the tower there are more rooms once used by soldiers on guard, with vaulted ceilings.
