Many fail by simply quitting to try and the leader will impose his or her will to ensure this does not happen.

An additional quality that a leader have to possess is being a great listener. A leader must listen to the people around him to lead effectively. Otherwise, it will always solely be his decision and there will be no freedom inside the group.

Although, this may seem like an effective way to get things done, in the long run this approach will only grate on the individuals on the team which in turn might cause them to lash out or quit. A totalitarian approach is not sustainable because of the dependence of the group on just one individual.

You may be able to get other people to do things by lying to them but a lie has the ability to catch up on the people telling them. Once the trust is broken it is hard to repair and the relationship is already strained.

Along with honesty, respect also play a big part in one's ability to lead. A leader must have the respect of the people around him or her. Without it, they will not follow the instructions given. However, respect is often mirrored and if you do not respect the people around you, the chance of them respecting you back is even less.

So how do you get the respect? With integrity, of course. Integrity is one's honor and a compromised sense of honor will leave anything a supposed leader's words empty and meaningless. No one wants to listen to someone that they think so little of.

A leader also needs to have the understanding of the strength of each individual. This will ensure that you maximize the assets of your group and work towards a more efficient way of working. This will also help the people around you to have a happier work environment while getting things done.

These are the most important traits that a person has to have in order to be a good leader. Each group needs different traits and whatever makes the group more successful both in the present and in the future is a good trait to have when looking for the right leader.
