The Transformation Of Calpe Spain

Calpe Spain is a small tourist town on the periphery of the Alicante province in one of the province's choicest strips of coastal land

. The town has three beaches bordering it and is located at the foot hills of Ifach Rock; it is also nestled in a prime spot in easy access of various large tourist resorts. But to many people all of this enticing information is largely irrelevant and they know Calpe in only one intimate way: as the town that started it all, the tourism revolution of Alicante!

The town is known largely for taking an initiative that many were either too afraid or too stagnant to take at the time, at the time when the Mediterranean largely consisted of small fishing ports and agricultural towns. In the 50's when all of Alicante was like this, Calpe took the initiative and moved towards this new direction and its sudden, successful transformation attracted many followers in the form of larger towns and cities and thus began Alicante's tourism revolution: A way out for most people from the shackles of a depressing history.

This success was so evident that this once small municipality saw an explosion in economic activity and a rapid progress in property development; where there was once only a single hotel serving all clientele, now there were several - hotels, guest houses, villas and much more to satisfy the needs of the tourists.

Another industry that developed as a consequence of this was the town's car hire industry, which grew quickly to serve the demands of the ever increasing influx of tourists satisfactorily. Cars - which were once only available in a few models and were expensive and costly to hire - were now cheap to hire and models were available by the dozen for tourists to pick as they would please or afford.

The demography and economy of the city also changed drastically as a result of all this, what was once a not so very distinguishable fishing and agricultural town, there now stood a proud tourist resort that surprisingly still remembered and honored its humble roots! The population of the town, too, grew exponentially and diversified with over 30,000 people representing different ethnic backgrounds and walks of life.

The silent factors, in the entirety of this success story, which quietly helped make Calpe Spain what it is today without ever surfacing, however, were the excellent climate and the wondrous gastronomy that the region enjoys. The warm sunshine, in which this town is bathed all year round, is a common feature of the region and contributes significantly towards the gastronomy that the town enjoys. A warm sun means that dishes prepared here are made from fresh ingredients and have a Mediterranean stamp on them. Even the ingredients used give off a Mediterranean air what with the use of abundant use of olives, rice, seafood and fruit wines in the many cuisines that the town serves. A truly transformed Mediterranean experience!
