The Transportation Of Perishable Goods

One type of cargo in which most semi-truck drivers don't like transporting

, is that of perishable goods. Often there is a strict deadline surrounding the transportation of perishable goods, and therefore lots of stress is accompanied in their transportation. Illogically, many companies seem to order perishable goods from companies who are hundreds of miles from where they are eventually sold, and therefore it's the requirement of the semi-truck drivers to transport the goods.

As semi-truck drivers don't usually have just one delivery per day, their deliveries are delivered in sequence. Goods are delivered to locations that are closer, and then they work their way outwards. The last delivery typically being the furthest away from their depot, and thus it's imperative that their deliveries are on time. It is not at all easy being a semi-truck driver, and the driving alone can cause considerable stress, not to mention the additional stress of having to be at certain locations at a certain time.

Semi-truck drivers have windows for which they can deliver items. If they're late or early, then this can cause delays. If they are early then the recipient might not be there, or not currently have the means to take delivery of the goods. Therefore if there aren't any safe areas to leave the delivery, then the semi-truck driver would have to wait until they had the necessary means. Often other deliveries can be made in the meantime, but this messes the entire schedule. If they are too late then companies may even refuse to take the goods. Especially supermarkets that work on tight schedules, and especially a cargo of perishable goods -- supermarkets are unable to sell goods that are going out of date, and therefore by rejecting the goods, they are giving a strong message to the courier service that the delay in delivering the goods is unacceptable, and that it's their responsibility for the goods having perished.

Planners of deliveries go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that the deliveries are made on time. This causes them copious amounts of stress, as it means the postponing of orders until a later time, and dealing with clients who are expecting their deliveries. Perishable goods tend to be given the most importance, since these are the ones that are least likely to be agreed any postponing by the clients. It makes little sense as to why supermarkets tend to order perishable goods, and other types of goods, from warehouses that are hundreds of miles from where they are sold. With all the bemoaning of carbon footprints which contribute to global warming lately, it is absurd as to why it should be acceptable for supermarkets.

Nevertheless, perishable goods are one type of cargo that most semi-truck drivers worry about. They are often pushed to their limits by the company to ensure that the goods are delivered on time. This can lead to an increase in stress, and all the ramifications of stress. In an ideal world, supermarkets and other companies wouldn't order goods from companies that are over a hundred miles away from where they need to be delivered to.
