There are at least two different dialects of the language, one that is commonly spoken in Taiwan and one that is spoken in China. Knowing which country you will be visiting will help you decide which dialect you should learn.

The problem is that many of the native speakers do not speak a formal version of the language They have created their own dialect of the language. People with a natural ability to hear tone or who have a musical background will find that they have an easier time learning the Mandarin language than people who have no musical training. The reason for this is because Mandarin is a language that relies largely on tone. Taking singing lessons will help you pick up the language quicker and will also help you form the words more accurately.
If you lack musical training, you should consider taking some singing lessons before you start learning to speak Mandarin. Not only will the voice training help you hear certain tones, it will also help you form the Mandarin words.
If at all possible, try to learn Mandarin Chinese from someone who is actually from China. This will help ensure that your accent is more accurate than if you learn the language from someone of a different ethnicity. No one is a better teacher than a person native to the language.
When you are taking a Mandarin vocabulary audio, you also need to consider learning how to read the language. Even if you are not going to be dealing with official business documents and are just visiting the country, being able to read the signs will come in handy. Even if you do not have the time or inclination to learn how to read words, you should at least take the time to learn the basic Mandarin alphabet.
