People who live in hard water areas are all too aware of its effects. They are familiar with clogged shower heads, furry pipes, ugly marks around sinks and taps. It not just the visual things either. Hard water means it is much more difficult to produce lather for washing. This means extra soap, shampoo and detergent is always needed compared to using soft water. Hard water causes towels and clothing to feel rough against the skin too.

All these are symptoms of water hardness, which is caused by calcium and magnesium ions carried by the water. Whenever hard water is left to evaporate on a surface, ugly milky deposits of calcium and magnesium compounds are left behind. This is the cause of the problem.

However, much of the damage caused by hard water is hidden and may well go unnoticed until it is too late. Your central heating system and water boiler will suffer from the effects of scale deposits in the same way. Although continually submerged in water, evaporation still occurs at the surface of a heating element as the water is heated. As a result scale is deposited on the element as it heats. The heating element now has to work harder and use more energy to heat the water through the a 'scale' barrier. Due to these deposits on the heating element, the surface area becomes larger which in turn causes even more deposits to form. Over time, the element becomes more and more inefficient and uses far more energy heating the water than necessary.

This will occur on every heating element in your household that comes into contact with water. This means washing machines; dish washers and electric showers will all suffer the same symptoms. At some stage the heating elements will blow completely due to overwork. Fitting new heating elements is a job for a qualified engineer which means it can be expensive.

The harmful effects of hard water and its associated costs can be nullified by use of a simple home salt based water softener. Usually costing in the region of a few hundred pounds (dollars), a water softener is easy to install, unobtrusive and generally maintenance free. It will soften your entire water supply so you need never be troubled by the effects of water hardness again. It will need topping up with fresh salt granules from time to time. However the cost of salt supplies is more than offset by the savings enjoyed on the reduced amounts of soap, shampoo and detergents needed.
