The Trucking Industry: Its Importance to Economy

Trucks are not just commercial motor vehicles

Trucks are not just commercial motor vehicles. They have profound importance in the freight business, specifically in the trucking industry. For practical reason, there is no individual who wants to purchase trucks and trailers if he or she does not engage in a trucking business. But for those who want the quality of a truck and of a normal vehicle, a pick-up truck can be a vehicle model of choice. Having that kind of vehicle could be used to transport shipment, a small variety perhaps, and might qualify the owner to engage in delivery or freight business. However, if using trucks in normal freight transactions, then certain regulations and impositions may exist as you go along with the operation.

Trucking is an activity of transporting goods and produce from the shippers to intended routes of delivery. And it is not just an activity of goods transfer; it is a business opportunity for truck drivers and operators.

In an economy driven by manufacturing outputs, retail demands and consumer spending, the trucking industry has filled in the gaps to the interlinking of manufactured goods to the retailers and ultimately to the end users. The intertwine of business activities involving resources from supplier to end user is the broad aspect of the supply chain. The distribution business regards its relevant role in the moving of resources. In land transport of goods, the trucks rule.

In the United States, trucks comprise a big factor as a transportation mode for all goods. In land, trucks bring the goods from the supplier to another supplier, from a manufacturing entity to a retailer in the delivery of finished products and from the retailer, whether online or offline to the end users. Trucks have tremendous role in the supply chain, in the delivery of products and in the moving of demands. Nearly 70% of all cargoes moved annually in the United States depend trucks. The US economy relies on trucks to traverse manufactured goods-- raw, work-in-process and finished-- and retail goods with worth of over 600 billion in dollars.

The trucking industry has a great impact in the economic aspect in the United States. It brings in money to the owner operators, trucking companies and in the operation of roads and national revenues. Estimated revenue in this industry is in the hundreds of billions while over 8 million people in the United States have truck driving and trucking-related jobs.

Truck driving job is an employment opportunity for CMV-licensed and would-be truck drivers. Annual average income of truck drivers amounts to 32,000 while the average owner operator can earn more in the United States. Demand for truck drivers depends on the economic climate. But regardless of the economic situation, jobs for truck drivers will always be around despite lay-offs. With over 500,000 companies in trucking business in the United States, employment opportunities for truck drivers will not fall to zero.

A multibillion-dollar industry, the trucking business has a huge impact in the supply chain, in the economy, road transformation and in the employment aspect. It contributes a great portion in the US economy and is a very important link in the supply and demand activities.
