The Truth About Potty Training

Are you having trouble potty training your toddler? As with anything else, some toddlers are harder to potty train than others. Children can be very stubborn, and for the most part, when they decide to use the potty is something they can control.

It is unfair to the toddler, and will be very frustrating for both of you, if you start potty training before your child is ready. Do not base when to potty train on the age of your sister's child, your friend's child or a child at church. All children reach milestones at different times and that is perfectly normal. Children's ages for potty training range from 18 months to 3 years of age, sometimes a little older. When you recognize that your child knows when they are about to potty in the diaper, liking hiding behind a chair to do it, they are likely close to being ready for potty training. Other signs are when they tell you the changing or try to take off dirty diapers.

Once you've determined your child is ready you need to decide whether to train on a toddler potty or your regular toilet. The choice is up to you and how your child will do best. You can get seats to put on the toilet that make it more comfortable for a toddler as well as step to make access easier. If you chose to be anything for potty training, consider taking your toddler with you for in help in picking it out.

While possible, it's rare for a toddler to not have accidents after potty training begins. Do not get angry, and consider asking what happened. Often toddlers simply don't want to stop what they are doing to go to the potty and they must know that is not acceptable. My son did this for years. It's also best to potty train during times when there is not a lot going on in the home; for instance, potty training a toddler with a newborn arriving will be difficult.

Provide a simple reward system for using the potty. Stickers on a calendar for every day they go without accidents, a piece of candy every time the successfully use the potty, or a special day to the park after one week without accidents are some examples. Always remember to encourage your child often, love and praise go a long way with a toddler and any child.
