The Tubes That Host A Party

, Jameos del Agua is the main attraction of the north east region of Lanzarote, not far from the sea, it is a natural wonder. With it being located in the north of the Island you can find a few Lanzarote villas in near by towns and villages.

Jameos del Agua, is considered the number one tourist centre on the island and was built by Jesus Soto and Luis Morales in 1968. It spawned from an idea by Cesar Manrique and was completed in 1987 with the construction of the auditorium. Jameos del Agua is located in the north part of Lanzarote and is part of the Atlantida volcanic cave system that was formed by the eruptions of the Corona volcano. This happened about three to four hundred years ago. This larger cave system also includes Cueva de los verdes.

It is a 6km long lava tube which was formed about 3,000 years ago when the Montaa La Corona erupted. The molten lava continued to flow as the surface began to harden, this led to the formation of the tubes, these run under the Atlantic.

The word 'Jameo' is used in this context referring to the large openings in the tube which formed when parts of the roof collapsed due to immense pressure built up by the volcanic gases. The word is Pronounced as Hameo as J's are H's.

At the entrance of the caves is the Jameo Chico which is a bar-restaurant, this has been converted. To get to there you have to go by a spiral stairway that wind down underground. It connects with the Jameo Grande by a pathway of 100 metres in length and 13 metres wide that crosses the small lake. This is home to the Jameito to tiny blind albino crabs that are unique and can not be found anywhere else. Also the at night the cave turns into a nightclub with a dance floor and two bars, this is seen as an unusual but fun venue.

The 'Jameo Grande' has been turned into a beautiful garden that features tropical plant species that are centred around a vibrant, turquoise coloured pool. There is a zig zag stair way that leads upwards from the pool to the top where there is also a terrace with a caf and small scientific museums which focus on volcanos. At the end of this Jameo is an auditorium that hold 600 seats and has great acoustics. In this venue they hold concerts and spectacle such as the prestigious Festival of Visual Music of Lanzarote. The Jameos del Agua was the first of the local government's centre of Art, Culture and Tourism. It opened its doors to the public in 1966 and over time the centre has had numerous additions and refurbishment since first opening. When the Auditorium re-opened the premier of the Pedro Almodovar film, Los Abrazos rotos which starred Penelope Cruz was held there in March 2009.
