The Tunguska Explosion or the Tunguska event was a massive ad powerful explosion

, which occurred near the Tunguska river what now has become Krasnoyarsk Krai, in Russia on 30th June, 1908 at about 7:14 a.m. KRAT 0:14 UT. It is believed that an air burst of a comet fragment or a large meteorite at an altitude of 5 to 10 kms above the earths surface might be responsible for such an explosion. Different studies conduct since then have revealed that the size of the object that created the explosion should have been about a few tens of kilometres. One interesting fact about this event, which makes it so mysterious, is that the comet fragment or meteorite did not touch the ground but burst in the air but still, this event is referred to as an impact.

Energy estimates regarding the blast have directed towards a conclusion that It was a blast equal to a blast of 10 to 15 megatons of TNT although some studies point out as high as 30 megatons of TNT. Several scientists have participated in the study of the event the most popular of them being Yevgeny Krinov, Leonid Kulik, Kirill Forensky and Wilhelm Fast., An area of 2150 sq. km. was directly affected because of the explosion and an estimated, 80 million trees were knocked off. On a Richter scale the explosion would have yielded a reading of 5.0 it is speculated. Had this happened in a metropolitan city, the explosion would have devastated the whole city. This is the largest noted explosion in recent history and similar explosions over the oceans would have gone unnoticed before the 60s due to lack of any global satellite monitoring system. A column of bluish light was observed at 7:17 a.m. by Tungus Natives in the hills located northwest of the lake Baikal. The light, which was moving fast across the sky, was as bright as the sun. About ten minutes later, a sound and flash similar to an artillery fire was observed. People were knocked off their feet and windows were shattered hundreds of kilometres away right after the sound because of the shockwave produced. The explosion is reported to have produced atmospheric fluctuations also which were felt as far as Great Britain. Night skies over Asia and Europe were aglow for the next few days after the explosion occurred. This phenomenon has been theorized as an event, which occurs when light passes through ice particle present in high altitude, which are formed due to extremes of cold temperature.

Because of the isolation of the Tunguska region, there was little or no scientific curiosity about the event at that time. Moreover, if at all there were any early expeditions to the site, all the records are expected to have been destroyed because of either of the three- the World War 1, The Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Russian Civil War. It was Leonid Kulik in 1921 who found about the explosion and was able to undertake an expedition in 1927.
