The Uk Moob War: Uk Plastic Surgeons Perform 80% More Male Breast Reduction Surgeries

Men rarely fret outwardly over their physical appearance

, but 2009 saw more of them various features. In spite of a dismal economic climate, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) say gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) surgeries increased 80%, which adds up to a total of 581 procedures. This puts gynaecomastia third on a list of most popular male surgical procedures.

A number of factors including medical conditions, medications, diets, obesity, age, and heredity cause male breasts, also known as moobs or man-boobs. But, regardless how they formed, patients find them embarrassing and horribly difficult to get rid of. Even when seeking the help of a qualified UK plastic surgeon, patients often have only two choices.

Liposuction is one possibility for getting rid of moods. With this procedure, plastic surgeons suck fatty cells from under the skin to flatten and smooth out the breast. This requires a small incision, and therefore, it doesn't leave behind much scarring and patients can enjoy a normal shape.

When this isn't an option, however, cosmetic surgeons use a single incision around the nipple or at the base of the breast to remove the excess fat and skin. Both of these are an outpatient procedure and require a few weeks of recovery time, during which patients wear a special compression garment.

Patients of these procedures report they are thrilled with the results, but they did not appear right away. Bruising, swelling, and aching occurred during the first few weeks of recovery, but pain medication made this easier to handle. For these patients, the discomfort was worth it.

Moobs Not the Only Procedure Gaining In Popularity in the UK

Britons sought more plastic surgery solutions overall last year. For men, the top five plastic surgery treatments included rhinoplasty (nose job) as the most common procedure. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), breast reduction, otoplasty (ear correction) and liposuction filled the list's last five positions. For women, this list was similar. Breast augmentation was the most popular with blepharoplasty, breast reduction, face / neck lifts, and tummy tucks in the remaining positions.

The BAAPS says plastic surgery clinics performed 36,482 or 6.7% more procedures in 2009, but not all procedures increased in popularity. Female facelifts fell 8% in 2009 while eyelid surgery, nose jobs, and brow lifts increased by 6%, 25%, and 43% respectively. Plastic surgeons believe the reason for this is that patients are only fixing the main areas of concern and spending less.
