. Owing to the physical and chemical stresses of the petrochemical environment they are available in a variety of corrosion and stress-resistant alloys including duplex, titanium and 6 Moly. They are used to join two pipes in a conduit together or, in the case of blind flanges, to seal the end of a conduit.

There is a confusing array of flange types, which may be of welded, bolted or threaded design. Within these categories are numerous sub-types, such as slip-on flanges.

Standard slip-on flanges are slightly larger than the outer diameter of the pipe they are connecting to. The pipe slides into the low-hubbed flange, and is then welded into place on both sides. Slip-on flanges are ideal for low-pressure applications, and are easily fitted and welded. Other benefits include ease of alignment, due to their small thickness, and the fact that pipes do not have to be cut to extreme accuracy. They also suffer little leakage. However, they are not suited to extreme pressure or high temperature environments.

Lap joint flanges are of slip-on design, but are used on lapped pipes or those fitted with lap-joint stub ends. The flange has a curved radius at the bore to accept the rolled stub end, and pressure against the pipe lap transfers to the gasket, creating a tight seal.

These flanges are better suited to high pressures than standard slip-on fittings, and dont require welding. Instead, they can be slipped over the pipe before fastening with bolts or collars. This means they are often used in systems needing frequent dismantling. Another advantage is that, where they are welded, the bolt holes can be aligned after welding is completed, as the flange is free to rotate around the pipe. This also makes it easier to join large-bore or over-stiff pipes.
