The Use of Helmet Cameras by:Mitchell Hickson

How would it feel to sit in a formula one car as it screams round the bend at a heart

stopping 260mph? The advent of helmet cameras has made this impossible task of capturing such a view easy. The sports camera has evolved today to create and capture scenes that occur as the viewer sees it. These cameras offer a viewer a direct scenario of the occasion as their sporting heroes view it and give a new direction to sports watching. This improves a direct involvement with the game and lets the viewer experience a bit of reality.

A helmet camera is a simple and small eyepiece that can be mounted on top of a helmet. It enables the user to capture the event as he views it happening. This is of a great advantage to athletes involved in extreme sports and adventure spots. The feeling of freefalling from the first person angle is exhilarating; a helmet camera offers the ability to share that same experience in the same exact manner.

The technology for helmet cameras has been in the offing for quite sometime, with the early prototypes coming out in the 90s. By the end of the decade, the technology had grown to become a vital part of television sports coverage. It was most popular in the genre of extreme sports. Over the past few years, the technology has been consistently improving and has now reached a new peak with the inclusion of HD technology into their image captures. These cameras also come with wide angle lenses, coloured screens and wireless remote controls. Many manufacturers also supply innovative mounts for the helmet cam that improve its functionality.

Another very popular camera among the 'Reality television generation' is the Bullet camera. This is most used in the security and journalistic divisions. The bullet cam gets its name from its unique cylindrical shape, which makes it easy to carry and easier to hide. Their size makes them apt for discreet and covert surveillances. These cameras are weatherproof and are fit for both indoor and outdoor use. Most bullet cameras come with an inbuilt system of Infrared night vision enabling them to function comfortably in the dark. Even so, there are quite a few drawbacks of using this camera. They are not very well equipped for wide angle shots. They usually have non adjustable lenses and cannot have their specifications changed. These cameras also require smart placement in order to escape detection as it is easy to see where the eye of the camera is pointed at. They are also vulnerable to tampering and are definitely not vandal proof. Excepting this, the Bullet camera is also among the most economical and versatile security cameras in the market today.

There are many stores that let out sports cameras and helmet cameras for rent. This is a good choice if one were to make a one time effort of it. But for an adrenaline fan, it is best to buy a camera in order to record the stunts performed.
