The Vacation You've Always Wanted

When I was 16 years old, I had the tremendous opportunity to spend the better part of a week in the Big Apple with my theatre troupe

. It has been one of the greatest adventures of my life to date, but while having a recent discussion with a friend about vacationing in New York, she indicated that she would be afraid of traveling to such a big city.

This is a legitimate anxiety, especially for those that haven't grown up in urban environments, like my friend hadn't. I've given a few safety tips in the past, so let me continue to highlight the essentials for a safe and fun adventure like the one I had.

Venturing to a big city by yourself is generally not a bright idea unless you're doing so for business or some other meeting where other people at least have a general idea of where you're going and when they can expect to see you. If you aren't going with family or a group of friends, do join a tour group.

Dining in New York City on the cheap is incredibly easy. There are corner bakeries and markets virtually everywhere, so instead of dining in a cafe or restaurant at every mealtime, opt for groceries or a 50 cent bagel at the deli around the corner. I ate some of the best pizza of my life at two dollars per slice at "hole-in-the-wall" eateries in Chinatown.

Take the money you would have spent on fancy food and apply it toward a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Why? Manhattan is a perfect central location for tours of the big city. Broadway, Times Square, and other favorite attractions will be right at your feet, and you will be able to walk to many of your destinations, saving you money on cab fare and other transportation fees.

When it comes to Broadway shows, you will probably be tempted to jump on the ones that are biggest, brightest, and newest. It's only natural. But typically, those tickets are also the priciest. If you're operating on a tight budget or just want to save some dough, then check out the musicals that have been playing for a little longer. Believe me, they are just as beautiful and impressive.

When you find yourself in an undesirable situation, stay calm. For example, while I was in a cafe with friends, an extremely intoxicated man stumbled in and began shouting and swearing. The owner of the establishment will most likely call the police, but if you are able to do so, you can proceed to do it.

It may be wise to keep a hands-free mobile device active and positioned on your ear in case you need to dial 911 without drawing attention to yourself. If at all possible, unobtrusively leave the establishment and alert a police officer if you see one. These situations are uncommon, but possible. As long as you are alert and cautious, you have nothing to worry about.
