The Various Hearing Test Options That Can Be Used On Children And Babies

A hearing test for a baby or young child will have differing components depending on the age of a child

. Objective tests may be used, as may Behavioral Observation Audiometry, Visual Reinforcement Orientation, and Play Audiometry.

If you have a baby, then it is likely that he or she will first have objective testing. This testing includes the Otoacoustic Emissions testing and the ABR, which is the auditory brainstem response. Other tests on infants might include the Electrococleography and the Tympanometry tests. The reason these are used on infants is because they can be done easily, and the infant does not need to respond. These are best for those under six months.

For babies that are under seven months, Behavioural Observation Audiometry may be used. This testing is done using a toy to make a noise near a baby to see how he or she responds.

Visual Reinforcement Orientation uses toys as well accompanied by sounds. This testing shows how a baby responds to various sounds by using a toy as something to get the baby to turn his or her head along with a sound.

Play Audiometry is used with older children who are able to follow directions. An example may be to have a child drop something or do something when he or she hears a sound.

The earlier a hearing test can be done, the better. Fortunately, however, there are ways to continue testing on through adulthood. Tests today begin as early as in the hospital when an infant is first born. These tests are not always accurate, but they are helpful in ruling out children having an inability to hear.

If you question whether or not your child has a problem, it is best to be safe. It is guaranteed to be difficult for you if tests come back that your child is unable to hear. It is important that even if this happens, you do not change the way you treat your child. Some cases have shown that children can have auditory neuropathy and with it fail a hearing test one day, and the next day they will pass it. This could be something your child is experiencing, so it is important to leave no stones unturned.

You might need to go to a larger hospital that has newer equipment and explain to the staff whether or not you think your child is able to hear. They may or may not find a different diagnosis through a hearing test that they do, but at least you will have done your best to get the answers you need.
