One of the earliest examples found, dates to 40 AD, in which wooden ball bearings were used in order for the support of a rotating table.
Galileo was the first to describe the use of ball bearings in the 1600s. The first bearings were wood. However, other materials used, consisted of things such sapphire, glass, ceramic, bronze, steel, as well as other metals and plastic.

Even so, they have the capacity to tolerate some misalignment with the outer and inner races. One of the advantages with the ball bearings has to do with their lower cost.
One type of ball bearings is angular contact ball bearings, which use axially asymmetric races. This type of load, allows it to pass through a straight line through the bearing, making it so that the contact angle on the outer race is the same on the inner race.
In most cases, they work best to support a combination of both axial and radial direction loads. Some of the advantages with this type of ball bearing have to do with how they are capable of sustaining high temperature in addition to wearing at a slower rate.
