The Various Ways Seam Sealing Tape Is Used

For more than 180 years, people have been using waterproof garments

. The rudimentary application of them was to put a simple chemical compound between layers of fabric. Now, with many advancements, we have impressive garments that keep the wearer dry and comfortable. Despite these advanced garments ability to withstand the harshest weather conditions and all sorts of applications, there is still one problem. Seams and leaking.

Any garment has seams, points where two pieces of material are sewn together. This creates a problem when you are trying to make a waterproof garment because needles make holes. You can use a chemical, or maybe even an adhesive seam sealant, but they just aren't that strong and durable. Seam sealing tape creates a bond around these puncture points and eliminates the very potential for leaks.

The most common application for seam sealing tape is the clothing worn by firefighters and other rescue or safety workers. It may be surprising to discover that there are common even everyday uses for seam sealing tape. It's around you everywhere and you might even own something that has it.

Outdoor Gear- The weather does not care if you have your hunt scheduled, or that you've just started your hike. Rain can happen anytime. Outdoor gear can be either completely waterproof or partially depending on it's use. In either case, seam sealing tape is used around the areas that are most susceptible to leaks to keep out moisture. Seam seal tape is used on outdoor clothing, but also sleeping bags, tents and backpacks.

Subterranean Gear-There are not many people that brave the strange environments of caves, underground lakes and river systems. These places have extremely heavy moisture so it's important to make sure you stay dry and comfortable. Seam sealing tape is used around the garment to prevent moisture from pooling in seams and then soaking into the clothes and onto you.

Hazmat Suits- There is not a garment like these. The entire suit needs to be air tight, so effective seam sealing is a matter of life and death. Those workers that respond to any sort of hazardous situation in need of these suits use the seam sealing tape to make sure that pollutants, viruses don't get in. Or, they are used to ensure that an area is kept sterile and protect patients that are susceptible.

Medical Environments- Much like with hazmat, seam sealants and sheets are used in the healthcare field. If a patient needs a clean room and a sterile environment, the tape is used not just on garments but in the room to ensure they are protected. It can also be used in the field to create a more sterile environment.

Military Personnel- Moisture has been a problem in past wars. Soldiers, infantry and marines were stuck in trenches at the mercy of the elements and nothing to protect them. Now, advancements have been make in the application of seam sealing tape and waterproofing. This allows for military personnel to be exposed to the elements for prolonged periods of time without many side effects. This increases the health and safety of troops.
