The View From Edinburgh

One of the highlights of visiting Edinburgh is finding the best view

. The city has many high points so plenty of options for viewing sunsets, sunrises, and panoramas.

Hotels near Edinburgh Castle will of course put you on some high ground. Defensive fortifications are almost always situated so as to ensure good views in all directions and Edinburgh Castle is no different. From the Argyle Battery, one can see north across the New Town all the way to the water of the Firth of Forth. From the other side of the castle you can look south onto the Pentland Hills.

Of course one of the disadvantages of the views from Edinburgh Castle is that you do not get to see the castle in the scene. Thus, it is advisable to check out some of the other high perches around the city. The 200-foot high Scott Monument has a series of viewing decks that offer views of the Castle and the city with the backdrop of Arthur"s Seat. The extinct volcano of Arthur"s Seat is of course the highest point for looking down upon Edinburgh Castle and indeed much of the Lothian countryside. The large expanse of Holyrood Park means that there are plenty of places to sit and different angles on the surroundings. However, as Robert Louis Stevenson pointed out, the best view in Edinburgh is from Calton Hill for this allows you to see both the Castle and Arthur"s Seat, the two most compelling sites in the city.

The last views worth mentioning are actually a short trip out of the city, but nearby enough even for visitors who are only in Edinburgh for a short time. The Pentland Hills (which you saw earlier from the castle) offer excellent views of a stark countryside with scattered lakes and rocky crags.

From here is it s short trip back to your luxury Edinburgh hotel. One back in your room, you can admire another view, one well deserved after a day of climbing hills and monuments "" the back of your eyelids.
