The Voip Phone: How The Internet Made Phone Calls Free

The VoIP phone may be an alien concept to some

, but really it's something that everybody should embrace because it allows phone calls to be made for free.

That's the beauty of new technology; increasingly, thanks to the internet, many things that used to cost a metaphorical arm and leg are now free. It's difficult to imagine that ten years ago everything was so different for the consumer.

Think about how people now consume music. Back in the day, CDs cost more than ten pounds for an album, and the only way you could hope to get some free music was to tape songs off the radio, a fond memory of many a childhood, but not exactly the best way to record clear, good-to-listen-to music without some rubbish radio DJ talking over most of the track.

Now, there are many ways a person can listen to music on the internet for free, and legally too. There are numerous websites which have an encyclopedic collection of tracks to choose from and all you must lend in return for the pleasure is your attention during the sporadic advertisements which pay for the sites.

So how does this relate to the VoIP phone? Well, making phone calls, especially the long-distance kind, has traditionally been rather costly. Remember when you weren't allowed to call your friends until 6pm at night on your parents' house phone because it was too expensive? And even then they would nag you to end the call after only ten minutes.

Then once you were old enough you got a mobile phone of your own, but this was the Nineties and your phone was pay-as-you-go, texts cost 10p each and you hardly ever actually used the mobile as a telephone because rates were astronomical. To cut a long story short, your life would have been a whole lot easier if the VoIP phone had been invented.

VoIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol, and involves taking the analogue audio signals your voice produces when you talk on the phone and turns it to digital data which can then be sent over the internet.

By using the software provided by VoIP phone companies, you can make calls for free, bypassing phone companies and their charges. If you use computer-to-computer methods, all you need is a microphone, some speakers and a sound card, and of course an internet connection and then you will never need to pay for a phone call.
