The Volga And What It Has For The People Who Visit It
After finding the Volga cruise brochure aboard the Soviet motor ship
, we wanted to take a visit. The experience of being able to ride the first Volga river boat that sailed with Americans alone, was like that of a ping pong tournament between the US and China.
With the traffic the rivers encounter on a daily basis, passing through different rivers, ships often have on board soviet workers on break, families on tour groups or mostly for other socialist states.
Smooth sailing and elegant is the Alexander Pushkin a 360 foot ship created near Vienna and able to seat 220 passengers. The relaxing bends which folded into the walls in room that were air conditioned with wide windows, gave us enough room to enjoy champagne parties. Taking 1,135 miles and 10 days was our trip from Rostov on Don.
A train, Ferries, plane rides and a bus was what greeted us on our way to the 24 day Volga Cruise. The end of the cruise gave is the opening to visit Moscow and Leningrad. Renting out their ships to American tourists is better for them rather than local US agencies offering cruises to Americans. Still, the widening of around ten new vessels allows individual passengers to take the cruise given the boat is not full yet.
It would cost about $1,900 for the next two to three cruises that a New York based company is tentatively planning for next year. Included in the Volga cruise which is about $ 700 to $800 are tours on the shore and meeting new people. It is during the night time that the boat sails to another destination and the daytime is spent enjoying the places we visit.
Russian polices are often the topic with the 9 academes on the ship with us. Instead of a roundtable discussion it turns into speeches and opinionated lectures. We get a chance to be on the boat with the Russians which also benefit us. Providing additional entertainment is how we see them enjoying their time. What powers them the whole night are their beer, vodka and brandy.
In our room, the music of the river slips in. Due to the many power developments in the river Volga is not what it was back then as now it has become many little lakes. Many buildings and factories take positions in the areas near the river which takes its beauty away. This reconstructed Volgograd welcomes the chaotic city life.
