We are back at camp. We found the lions: four females of which one had quite an attitude. "Would you like a beer?" I ask. "No, thanks, a cold drink will do," Xaba answers. "Tell me more about your selection course. It was very different from our course," says Xaba. "It was after the Parachute Battalion. I met him at the Battalion." "Who?" asks Xaba. "The Lieutenant. He was our Company Commander for a few months and he was with us during those skirmishes on the Border. He had to serve some time outside the Special Forces before he could rejoin the 'Recces'. There was a special bond between us, for me at least. Almost mysterious! I don't think he knows it, but he made a big impression on my life. He made me want to be a part of it.
"It was the eleventh day of our selection course. Our last day, or so we thought. One of the guys had been on the previous course. He had not completed it because he had contracted malaria. Every day so far, we had done exactly the same things they had done on their course, up until the eleventh day. They finished on day eleven, here at the river. We also reached the river on day eleven, at the same place where their course ended. "The tension could be cut with a knife. Our eyes were full of expectation. 'Today is our last day too!'
Our instructors must have known that we suspected something. After all, it was not the first time they were doing this. We were constantly on the lookout for the table bearing food and condensed milk, bread and Coke. We could hardly wait for our prize mouth-watering food and sweets; the things we talk about all the time whilst on course. Some more than others!
