That was probably what woke me. 'Voertsek,' I shouted. My voice was croaky and not very loud. The hyena just looked at me. When I tried to get up, it turned away a little. The beast was arrogant, as if it knew! I lay down again. The moon glinted white off the sand. 'What is the time? Is there still time?' I kept watch on the hyena out of the corner of my eye. My tongue felt thick, pushing against my palate. I believe that was the most intense moment of my life."

"What do you mean?" asks Xaba. "I began talking to the Father and asked Him about the meaning of my life. This time I confided my dreams to Him. My intentions ofwhat it is I want. Even though I was as weak as a baby, I knew that spiritually I had never been so close to Him before. This was not grace. That night there was more. An unfamiliar Closeness. At that moment I knew with absolute certainty that this was what I needed to do." "What?" asks Xaba.

"To be a soldier. This is me, this is what I must do and no-one will take that away from me! I was meant to be a soldier and in a flash I knew. Intuitively! I understood that in my soul it had already been determined a long time ago.
