The Water Cooler – how did that come about?
The Water Cooler how did that come about?
You see it nearly every day, the machine in the corner that you can count on for fresh, clean and cold water. But did anyone ever stop and think where the idea came from?
Back in 1906 the first water fountain was invented with the first bottled water dispenser appearing in the mid 1990's. The need for a hygienic water supply was seen by two men: Halsey Taylor and Luther Haws. Halsey's father had died from an illness caused by drinking contaminated water and Luther had become concerned after seen children drinking from a tin cup which had been tied to a tap for all to share.
Their motivation differed slightly, but the result was the same: the water cooler.
There are always jokes about employees catching up on the latest gossip whilst huddled around the water cooler on a Monday morning and it is usually a popular place for people to stand after a night out. People often pick their desk space based on the location of this piece of office furniture.
All jokes aside however the water cooler offers employees a location to gather around to share ideas and ask questions which can be productive. Many new offices are taking this idea forwards are creating separate, specific areas for employees to meet and chat through ideas in an informal way, these so called critical meeting points are essential in the workplace.
The water cooler is partnered with many others appliances to make life easier for people who just fancy a drink or a snack. General vending machines including drink vending machines, snack vending machines and food vending machines are a brilliant addition to the office.
However water coolers don't just stop there, the future is bright and filled with advancements. It is now possible to have a heating element included so that the machine can dispense hot and cold water so it is possible to make tea and coffee.
So next time you get up from your desk to go and get a drink of water, think back to Halsey and Luther, if it wasn't for them you would be sharing a tin cup with everyone in the office, yes including Barry from accounts
