The Ways Ballroom Dancing Boosts Your Health
Do you like to dance but haven't done so in years
? You feel like you need to get up and move more, but cannot get inspired by the local sweaty gym, and don't have time to do a three mile swim? If you even vaguely resonate with any of these, you may like to consider taking up ballroom dancing as your way to reap the many benefits of exercise.
Studies both in America and abroad have shown time that social dancing benefits health in exactly the ways that we seek. According to Mayo Clinic researchers it "helps boost energy, improve strength, increase muscle tone and coordination all while reducing stress." Italian studies have delightfully shown that 21 minutes of social dancing three times a week is a fantastic alternative to a bicycle or treadmill workout.
Did you know that dancing is the best way to increase your metabolism, even better than the more typical gym exercises? That's what experts claim. Dancing requires a surprisingly large amount of energy, an amount that you have no problem expending when it is simply so much fun! There are so many dances that really get your heart rate up, help you shed those extra pounds, tone your muscles, strengthen your core AND improve your skin.
And what did the National Heart, Ling and Blood Institute (NHLBI) say about dancing? Well, they indicated that dancing can decrease your blood pressure, aid you in managing your weight, lower your risk of coronary heart diseases and strengthen your bones, especially those on your hips and legs. The good just keeps coming.
Another study published in the New England Journal of Medicine even found that dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in the elderly. This alone could well be reason enough to get up and dance!
But just like anything, the benefits of an endeavor is related to what you put in. And no less for dancing. The benefits you get are contingent upon the type of dancing you do and the intensity. An additional benefit of dancing is that it is a weight-bearing activity and this builds bones, an important consideration for today's Baby Boomers.
I am confident you will find your own multiple reasons why ballroom dancing will benefit you - and your loved ones!
