The Ways That Work, The Ways That Don't
I am happy to announce to the world that my brother has been smoke-free for almost
three months--his wife, too! In just a few short weeks, they have reaped a great many benefits, including a cleaner environment for their asthmatic son. The truth is, though, that they both have tried to quit in the past, but they feel they are truly committed to remaining smoke-free these days. So what made a difference for them?
Well, obviously, a combination of factors influences successful addiction nixing, but let me tell you a few of their key secrets. First off, they decided not to go cold turkey this time. They previously thought that will power was the only ingredient necessary to overcome cravings and quit for good, but the dynamics of addiction require a more complex approach. To stop smoking forever, you need to recognize that you will need extra help. So cut down gradually and use the help of chewing gum, patches, or pills if necessary.
There are even some prescription medications now available to otherwise healthy smokers to assist in reducing the intensity of cravings, but make sure that when you discuss the possibility with your doctor, you are forthcoming about any other medicines you are taking, along with any other relevant details. Many people need extra support in order to truly pull through. Fortunately, the internet has opened up a world of possibilities, allowing you to access message boards and support groups with just a few clicks, practically any time the urge hits.
Plus, special quit smoking classes can help give you specific tips to deal with your individual struggles. My brother and his spouse found local quit smoking seminars where they were able to connect with people in the same boat and to learn from leaders that have been smoke-free to decades. They now have friends they can reach out to if they feel they're going to cave. Having someone close by to contact is useful because he or she can physically prevent you from smoking--either by whisking you away from your home or by throwing away cigarettes.
One of the premiere reasons why they have been so successful is that they have committed to quitting together. Having a partner that smokes will substantially increase your probability of failure, particularly if you live together. So to dramatically improve your chances, it's important to consult each other and agree on a quit date. If you can't agree to go smoke-free, do ask your partner to be courteous--to smoke outside, wear a smoke jacket, and so on. The most important thing by far is not to give up. Your addiction doesn't have to own you--it can be beat.
