The White Golden Retriever - Does It Really Exist?
The White Golden Retriever - Does It Really Exist
?
Golden retrievers have long been one of the most favorite breeds of dogs for household pets. This breed is easy to take care of, very affectionate, and loyal. They are big enough to serve as guard dogs for the home but at the same time still friendly enough to cuddle and play with. While most golden retrievers are gold or cream in color, there has been quite a demand for the white golden retriever in recent years. However, there has been a debate about whether a white retriever is a different breed on its own or if they are just a variation from the existing breed.
Experts in the dog breeding industry have said that there is no such thing as a white golden retriever since this breed does not come in the white variation. What has been considered as white really is the pale, very light, cream-colored fur that some retrievers are born with.
So as not to consider them as faults to the standard of the breed, some breeders have decided to call them Rare White Golden Retrievers or English White Golden Retrievers. However, the coats of these dogs are not purely white, they are just extremely pale compared to the standard color of the breed.
Some breeders claim to have white goldens as some sort of a marketing ploy to sell the pups at a higher price. But in reality there is no registered variation of the standard retriever breed. Besides, if a family decides to have a dog join their home, the color should not really matter to them. The color of the dog's coat does not by any means affect its temperament.
Those who are looking for dogs should beware of breeders who offer them a white golden retriever. Before they decide to buy they should look into the papers and inquire about possible genetic testing. The buyer should ask the right questions so that they do not get tricked into buying a pup for a higher price just because the color of their fur is paler compared to the standard of the breed.
For those who are really looking for a golden that is white may find one but chances are they are mixed with another breed in order to get that real snow white coat because a real purebred one will never have a white coat. The closest thoroughbred variety would probably be the English Golden Retriever. Their coats can be extremely pale or light cream so that they can almost be considered as white.
