Lake Natron is found in Tanzania and it's very close to the Kenyan border
. It's a salt water lake that is located on the eastern side of the Great Rift Valley. The lake is fed by a river known as Ewaso Ng'iro and mineral rich hot springs that drain down the lake. The area around the land is usually very hot and temperature can rise up to 500C. During such times a lot of evaporation occurs due to the high levels of salts and other minerals. Lake Natron experiences a lot of evaporation due to color of the lake. As water evaporates during hot and dry periods, it leaves hard alkali salt crusts that are mostly colored red or pink due to the microorganisms that live there. Due to salt levels and the high temperatures, the lake does not support a lot of wildlife. However it's a very important area for flamingos and it's also a habitat for endemic algae and the salty water fish. The algae and the fish act as foods for the flamingos. Lake Natron is just a regular breeding ground for the Lesser Flamingos. There area is inhabited by over 2.5 millions of the flamingo species. The birds increase as the lake's salinity increases because this leads to the development of cynobacteria meaning more algae and planktons will be produced. The lake's location makes it a very safe breeding ground for the Lesser Flamingos. It acts as a barrier to predators that would destroy the bird's breeding nests. The place offers good outings to bird lovers.
