The push button contact switch is seen everywhere in daily life. From doorbells and keyboards, to lift switches and car stereos, most of us use these switches every day. The mechanism of these switches is based on the fact that electrical circuits must be closed to work properly. When the circuit is closed electrical current can flow uninterrupted through the wires and other components of the circuit. The switch plays a key role in an electrical circuit because it gives us the choice of making the circuit function when we need them to.
Push button switches are made in two basic types: momentary or non-momentary, maintained contact switch. A momentary action switch is activated after a device is moved from its original/normal position. The push button switch requires constant pressure, to be able to keep the circuit closed and the current running because it is designed to come back to its normal position the minute the actuating pressure or force is taken off.
The momentary push button switch has a spring inside it which activates when the switch is pressed. When the switch is pressed or is in the on position, the tiny metal spring touches the two wires and completes the circuit and allows a free flow of electricity. When one takes the pressure off, the spring withdraws and breaks the contact, interrupting the flow of the current. The key to momentary switches are the springs which keeps the contacts apart. When pressure is exerted, the spring gives in, allowing for contact.
Such a mechanism is used by most of us every day, including when we press phone buttons or use a calculator or ring the doorbell. A
sealed pushbutton switch is further sectioned by normally-on or normally-off.
Normally-Off switches are the ones in the off mode until they are pressed. The majority of sealed pushbutton switches are made this way. Normally-On switches are the ones in which the pressing of the switch interrupts the current flow and the circuit breaks. Maintained contact switches are the ones which actually retain the switch and circuit in the activated mode (whether open or shut). Once pressed the switch remains activated in the mode till it is pressed again to come out of that mode. A maintained contact switch will remain on when you press it and continue to function till you press it again to bring it to the off mode.
These switches are graded by manufacturers on the basis of their current holding capacity and voltage limits. Such grading is required to define usage areas and levels as well. Pushbutton switches used in industrial applications need to be military grade and meet industry quality and functionality standards. Normal open momentary contact switches are the standard in industrial and manufacturing applications; however, normally closed switches may be used as an alternative.
