The Works Of Alajandro Gonzalez Inarritu

Born in Mexico City, Alajandro Gonzalez Inarritu had no real aspirations as a child towards making movies

. Yes, he enjoyed movies, like any other youth, but unlike many of his eventual peers, he never had a burning desire for making films and never felt it was fate that led him to movies. And yet, his early years were marked by incidents that would later inform his films in ways he could not have imagined - like some of the characters in his movies, Alajandro was dealt a cruel blow that impacted him emotionally long afterwards; his father suddenly lost his job as a banker, and with it the family lost their sense of security and the life they had been accustomed to living up until then. Suddenly being forced to leave their upper middle class home in Mexico City, Alajandro's family was reeling. His father saw the job loss and life change as an opportunity to re-invent himself, and so he did: he became a produce vendor and established himself amongst the restaurant scene in Mexico City, returning his family to stability in the process. These changes and their aftermath, as well as witnessing first-hand how it impacted his family emotionally, would eventually inform the films Alajandro would one day make.

Many times Alajandro thought music was his life's calling - for this reason he went to Universidad Iberoamericana, and studied communications. During this time he became a radio host at a local rock and roll station, eventually becoming the station director. He was asked to create music for some Mexican films such as Garra de Tigre (1989), while working within this capacity. Getting into the film community by way of music, he realized that he actually wanted to direct films.

In the early 90's Alajandro started his own production company, Z Films, and began to work on writing, directing and producing, culminating in his first credit - producer and director of Detras del Dinero in 1995. His next project would establish him as an emerging talent. He would spend three years writing (and re-writing) three stories which would become the basis for his film, Amores Perros (2000). His critical acclaim and Oscar nominations helped Alajandro propel his career forward.

He was returned to the familiar territory of his youth when he worked on his second movie, 21 grams in 2003 - the emotional impact and aftermath of sudden tragedy. The film garnered massive critical acclaim, as well as Oscar nominations for Watts and Del Toro, and stars Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, and Naomi Watts. He followed up 21 grams with Babel, a multi-story tale with heavy emotional content set across the globe. The film would go onto net Alajandro the Golden Globe in 2007 for Best Picture as well seven additional Oscar nominations (including Best Picture and Best Director).

His reputation firmly established, he was now in the surreal position of being a sought after talent by some of the biggest names and studios in Hollywood. He had, in a word, arrived. The once self-described 'frustrated musician' had taken the pivotal events of his youth and their emotional ripples and used them to inform his films as an adult; Just like his father, he managed to re-invent himself along a whole different life path, due to necessity.
