Although still relatively new, the SaaS model EMR or the Cloud EMR is steadily gaining popularity amongst practices of all sizes.

The SaaS aka Software as a Service model allows a user to access the system without IT, back up and support hassles. With requirements limited to just a web browser, Cloud based EMR allows instantaneous access from any location. With Cloud technology, providers save a lot of money on upfront cost of hardware procurement and ongoing cost of maintenance. Out of the aforementioned vendors, Athenahealth and CureMD provide an integrated EMR with Practice Management software and better interoperability for a seamless workflow. The rest claim to interface well with third party Practice Management solutions, occasionally giving rise to interoperability and interfacing issues. Another concern with 3rd party application integration is that users consistently have to switch between two different applications with different navigational feel and functions, often leading to user frustration.

In terms of features and technological upgrades, Athenahealth, MIE, CureMD and Practice Fusion are considered the industry leaders. Most of the CureMD user base is content with the functionality of the application and despite an extensive feature set, CureMD is considered as an extremely user friendly system. The solution is also regarded for its flexibility, with its customizable specialty templates allowing specialists to personalize their specific templates. Athenahealth is also noted for quality and features, while the MIE user base finds the solution apt in adopting new technology. Although Practice Fusion is currently a new entrant and lacks an integrated Practice Management system, it has basic features required by smaller practices.

Lastly, the most essential component of a SaaS EMR is obviously the service itself. According to a recent independent survey, CureMD received the highest rating amongst the aforementioned for the quality of customer service. Most users plan to stick with the application in the long run or buy the solution again if given the choice. MIE, Athenahealth and Practice Fusion users also feel content with their services and feel that they will keep using the applications in the long run as the future of Cloud EMR looks bright.
