Robotics is the study of robots and one branch of artificial intelligence

. Robots are man-made mechanical devices that can move by themselves. Japan is the world's leading manufacturer and consumer of robots. The robotics industry in Japan is filled with huge opportunities because of high demand for robots from highly competitive manufacturing companies. Hence, it has one of the largest robotics market valued around $7 billion in the world.

Japan's eagerness to embrace the new technology has made it a potential leader in the flourishing social welfare robotics field. Japanese robotics market is expected to fuel explosive growth and projected to grow to $70 billion dollar by 2025.

Most of the robots manufactured are used for industrial applications and it is believed that Japan has already employed over a quarter of a million industrial robot workers, more than any other nation, in an effort to counter high labor costs and to support further mechanization of its industries. Since then the demand for industrial robots has been strong and growing every year.

Japan, which has the most rapidly ageing society, hopes that this new robotic army could be part of the answer to an ever-declining birthrate and shrinking workforce in the country. As one robot can replace several workers, it is music to the ears of many government officials who know that the nation's declining work force will weigh heavily on future pension and health care programs.

Moreover, robotics gave big technology companies in Japan a global showcase for their cutting-edge research capabilities. For example, technological leader Honda spent millions of dollars for the development of its first walking humanoid Asimo.

The roots of the national love of robotics in Japan can be found in the Shinto religion in which it is said that all things, including objects, can possess living spirits. Thus, robots have a long and friendly history in Japan, and humanoid robots are considered to be living things and even desirable members of families.

No matter how clever or cuddly, even Japanese robots have a serious flaw: their price. But it is unlikely to stop Japanese companies from developing robots. Everyone knows robotic technology plays a larger role in Japan than anywhere else in the world.
