The Worlds Biggest Bird
There are hundreds of bird species in the world
. There are hundreds of different sizes, shapes, weights and heights in these birds. Undeniably, however, there is only one bird that breaks above the rest to be known as the worlds largest, heaviest, and most unique bird. This bird is the ostrich, or Struthio camelus to give it it is Latin name. These birds are truly remarkable creatures, and there are many features about them which not only make them obvious in their title, but also make them stand out from every other bird.
The weight of an ostrich can vary dramatically, depending on a lot of factors. These things include their circumstances, environments, if they are being bred or if they are wild birds. However, the average weight for an ostrich ranges between 140-290 lbs. that is anywhere between 10 and 20.5 stone. Their large weight is a culmination of their complex bone structure, lush feathers, and large stature. Commonly, the weight of an ostrich will not have much impact on the speed at which it can run. This is once again down to their unique and complex bone structure, which allows the ostrich to have the wonderful ability of speed.
When it comes to speed, the average of an ostrich is 97.5km/h, which is 60.6mph. This means that at an average speed alone, the common ostrich could run from Lands End to John o Groats in just under 10 hours. It is no surprise then to learn that the ostrich is not only the fastest bird in the world, but it is also the fastest creature on two legs to currently walk this earth. This means that no matter what other bird this animal is pitted against, it will always win and with a likely noticeable difference. An ostrich would also stand a good chance of survival against a Cheetah, should one wish to make an ostrich it is play. This is because the cheetah runs at an average of 61mph, making it only fractionally faster than the ostrich.
Whilst being matched in speed with the cheetah, it is no doubt that the ostrich is miles above in the height category. The average height of a full-grown ostrich is between 6-9 feet tall. That is taller than most people, especially those birds leaning toward the 9ft height. When it comes down to it, the ostrich is incredibly large in a multitude of ways. It seems that this birds pattern of evolution was bigger, better, faster, stronger. It is an evolutionary pattern that has given the ostrich many titles to be proud of. One title, however, is entirely untrue.
Ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand. This myth likely began with Pliny the Elder (AD 23 to 79), who wrote that Ostriches "imagine, when they have thrust their head and neck into a bush, that the whole of their body is concealed." However, this myth may also be born from the strange yet helpful habit that ostriches have, in which they will swallow stones and pebbles in order to crush the food in their stomach. This means that occasionally, these large birds will dip their head to the sand. Whatever the reason for it, it is now very common for people to be mocked as an ostrich, meaning that they refuse to see the truth or will hide in a cowardly way.
Ostriches will throughout their life swallow many stones. The average weight of stones to be resting in an ostrichs stomach at any one point is that of 2.2lbs. Since ostriches are toothless, they need the stones in their stomach in order to completely crush the diet of seeds, shrubs, grass, fruit, flowers and the occasional locust that they may consume. The stones in an ostrichs stomach may also be a contribution toward the ostrichs incredible weight. Despite being so heavy, and having rolling stones in their stomach, ostriches are able to cover incredible distances at wonderful speeds with ease. This is because of their feet. Ostriches only have two toes. Where the average amount of toes on birds is usually four. However, their inner toe is nailed, and gives them traction as they run. This is how they are able to outrun the majority of other animals, and give the cheetah a run for its money.
