The Yorkshire Three Peaks

I purchased some new outdoor equipment just lately and so made the decision I had

to justify my expenditure by setting myself a stretch, I decide on the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the undertaking being to ascend the three highest peaks in Yorkshire - Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent. Frequently its all 3 in a single day however this seems like too much for me and so I will tackle 1 each day. I pick up up my brand new kit and Ken the pooch and set off to my accommodation in Ingleton.

I decide to climb Ingleborough first, its not the highest but still appears the more hard work from a way off, the day before I prepare my course selecting one that is not the main trail as I would like to avoid the other walkers. I decide on a round trek ending up doing a walk by the side of a river. I am up and through the door early the next morning refusing to let the drab weather stop me. Ken and I set out up the stony trail raring to go. I was accurate about this route, there are not lot's of other walkers but I quickly get in to step with a family, passing them and then getting overtaken as we take breaks or pause to take in the scene.

Ken is a great motivator setting the pace from time to time dragging me up the fell, his four legs providing him an edge. Finally we arrive at the top and the view is magnificent making all of it worth doing, I can make out the major route which would seem busy nonetheless it appears very much easier than what I have recently tackled. I see the family members yet again and am envious of their al-fresco dining, really should consider sandwiches tomorrow! Soon after a breather we arere off again, my descent route is a steep one so I pick my way down cautiously much to The dogs annoyance, eventually we arrive at the bottom but have got the stream walk before we are back at the car. This seemed like an excellent idea yesterday however I am regretting it today, after some while our vehicle comes into view and we are done for today.

Next is Whernside, I follow to the primary route today as the extended walk yesterday means that I am sore. Whernside is the tallest of the fells and although the route is not as steep as Ingleborough its more of a trek. The trail follows the well-known Settle-Carlise Railway for awhile, a rambler's 1st panorama on the path entailing the awe inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. Soon enough the industrial masterpiece has passed and the ascent starts out. The dog and my lunch are the primary motivators. Both of us reach the summit and the sight is stunning, once more justifying the trek uphill.

We have our picnic then set off on making the way back, the downward way is steeper than the ascent and I slip over, fortunately I have loads of padding on my bottom therefore no injuries only to my pride! Both of us reach the bottom of Whernside however still have some way to travel get to the car, fortunately its a level trail along the base of the valley therefore I can get on with experiencing the scenery as opposed to concentrating on where to put my feet next.

Finally Pen-y-Ghent beckons, my motivation is really not there today however I start off nevertheless. Pen-y-Ghent is the starting point for people brave enough to undertake it all in 12 hours. I can spot why as it is certainly the gentlest and prettiest path, my fellow ramblers seem friendlier at the same time. Even the soaking I get in the rain shower, which ends too fast even for me to check out my new waterproof suit, doesnt erode my spirits. We are rapidly at the summit and taking in the scenery, I think back over the last several days and understand what I have achieved a grand total of 2142 metres climbed (then down again) and 24 miles walked. I start considering about the next activity, but first I have got to get down Pen-y-Ghent!
