The aged care crisis – you can help

A recent Access Economics report has found that the Australian aged care sector

in both residential and community settings is in crisis, with a significant gap between the demand and supply of aged care. The Survey of Disability Ageing and Carers (SDAC) in 2004 found that 678,800 people requiring assistance either had their needs partly met, or not met at all. Since then, the situation has only gotten worse. Which is why the ageing Australian population needs an increased aged care workforce to give older Australians adequately staffed and quality care.

And, in light of the ageing Australian population, the aged care industry is only going to grow.

- Why should you help? Tasmania's welfare group (TasCoss) recently released a report that found that elderly people can remain living independently if they have community support and access to transport and health care.

Aged care work does not only mean working in nursing homes. Rather, home care assistants, community support workers and personal care assistants play an important role for the elderly or ill who require help and assistance but do not wish to move into a permanent aged care facility. Such workers help their patients retain their daily routines and functioning. Increased workers in this area would also relieve the funding and staffing shortages of nursing homes.

Due to the growing need for aged care workers, it a growing sector with increasing job opportunities. Furthermore, it is a rewarding career path that allows you to make a significant difference in the comfort and health of elderly Australians.

- How can I help? There is a difference between qualified and unqualified aged care givers. A carer is a person of any age who provides any informal assistance, in terms of help or supervision, to older or disabled people. Carers are usually related or personally linked to the person requiring care. To become a formally qualified aged care giver, however, aged care courses provide the qualifications needed to work as care givers, assistants and community support workers.

All Cert II aged care courses include a component of aged care training to ensure that all students get hands on, practical experience while they study. For those looking to get into the sector who have time constraints, online courses are available.
