The "Other" Style Sheet Language
Cascading Style Sheets or popularly known as CSS is one of the most popular style sheet languages used in the market today. Part of its popularity is because of its simplicity, a kind of feature that many other styling languages lacked. However, other than CSS, the Extensible Stylesheet Language or XSL is also a popular style sheet language used in today's modern trends of web designing.
The "Other" styling language
At the start of the new revolution known as the "tableless web design", many style sheet languages were introduced as an answer to the growing concern of using tables in website design. One of the many popular style sheet languages introduced is CSS. However, other than CSS, XSL have also been a very prominent name in the industry. However, XSL have evolved drastically from its initial design into something very different from its original purpose.
Other than a recognized name as a style sheet language, the term is also used to refer to a family of languages used to transform and render XML documents. These include XSLT or XSL Transformations and XSL-FO or XSL Formatting Objects. One reason why XSL is more powerful than CSS is that XSLT (XSL Transformations) is a Turning complete language, while CSS is not. This demonstrates a degree of power and flexibility not found in CSS. Additionally, XSLT is capable of creating content, such as automatically creating a table of contents just from chapters in a book, or removing/selecting content, such as only generating a glossary from a book. Compared to XSL, CSS can only selectively remove content by not displaying it.
Other than XSLT, the XSL-FO (XSL Formatting Objects) is also known for its own capabilities which is beyond that of CSS. XSL-FO is unlike CSS in that the XSL-FO document stands alone. CSS modifies a document that attached to it, while the XSL-FO document (the result of the transformation by XSLT of the original document) contains all of the content to be presented in a purely presentational format.
Disadvantages of XSL
There are, however, several disadvantages to using XSL, which is why CSS is still the most popular style sheet language used in the market. Though the combination of XSLT and XSL-FO makes a very powerful styling language, it does require a very skillful programmer to make use of its full potential, making it very complicated for those focusing more on the design rather than its back-end programming.
The XSL-FO alone is known for its complexity. According to manyWeb design Philippines experts, this is because implementing an FO processor is very difficult. CSS implementations in web browsers are still not entirely compatible with one another, and it is much simpler to write a CSS processor than an FO processor.
