The ‘art’ in Heart

The easy part is figuring out what you want to do with your life

, the challenge comes in when you try to make it happen. Dreaming the life could probably come as second nature to most, but living the dream is easier said than done. In order to get what you want you have to start making things happen, no matter how improbable and daunting it may all seem. At some point you just have to take that leap of faith.

Believing in the intangible became a fete of mine since I decided on pursuing art studies despite my familys overt objection. Coming from a brood of corporate lawyers, my preferred course was looked down upon. I was ridiculed, treated no less than a disgrace for wanting to do wall art and mirror art for a living. No one not even my twin sister thought it possible to live off creating music video art or any kind of art for that matter.

I sought solitude from Dennis Carbee and his interactive art. If only I could get lost in his kaleidoscope of images, in the colorful blur. I took inspiration from the so-called eccentric artists mocked for being able to express themselves rather openly through drawing, painting and sculpture among others. With what little resources I had, I took classes at the local art institute and joined the circus, so to speak.

It did not take long for me to be acquainted with the industrys whos-who and introduced to different types of art forms. A typical night out on the town would be visiting an exhibit or two of some emerging artist the place being Manhattan then wasting away til the break of dawn at the newest underground place-to-be. I was caught in a whirlwind that was hanging with artists wannabes and pros alike.

Being surrounded by artists, people I pretty much understood and who understood me as well, immensely helped in living out the dream. I was rubbing elbows with gallery managers, a few generous enough to offer me a spot at their exhibitions after presenting to them my digital and printed portfolio of works. It was overwhelming to say the least, but believe me the last thing youd want to do whilst youre on the rise is turning egomaniacal.

There were galleries intended for high-end, show, new artists and art associations all of which require insider connections in order to get in. With the number of art galleries across the city it seemed impossible to miss out on your whole fifteen minutes of fame. As for mine, I know in my heart that its just around the corner of Fifth Avenue.
