The Seychelles are an archipelago of over 100 tiny island spread out over 250 square kilometres of Indian Ocean. This tropical paradise has long been a favourite destination for holidaymakers, and it rich interesting history is one that often leads others to question how or why it reached the heights of tourism it has today. The classic volcanic scenery and tropical climate make it an obvious choice for anyonelooking for a beach holiday. The history of the Seychelles reads like something out of a Disney movie, completely uninhabited when they were discovered by early Arabic traders and still uninhabited when they were first sited by Vasco Da Gama several hundred years later. Unlike any other African destination you could visit the tropical islands of the Indian Ocean provide a romantic getaway that has become the stereotypical image for island living.

The islands were a favourite hideaway for Pirates during the days of buccaneering.The Seychelles today still have a strong French influence despite the fact that before independence they were ruled by the British. The early colonisers were French traders that saw the potential of the outpost to African and middle-eastern trade. The islands subsistence farming has been slowly declining over the last couple of decades as tourism has started to become the primary source of income for the islands.

There is no true indigenous population of Mauritias and the Seychelles, as these islands were uninhabited, so it is one of the few countries in Africa that European colonisers can call their own. The population today consists of descendants of African slave bought to the islands to work the plantations that the colonisers developed. Their culture and language is referred to as Creole, a mix of French and African. The slaves were originallyMalagasy this mean that they were predominantly from Eastern African countries such as Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Nigeria. Today tourism counts for a much bigger percentage of the gross national income and most entrpeneurs are turning their attention to the tourism sector as a way to make money. This makes economic sense as the size of the island and it's naturally increasing population means that the amount of money to be made from farming is extremely limited compared to the revenue that can be drawn from tourism. The Seychelles can be visited for most of the year which means the off season, when tourist operators wouldn't be making money, is short. The decline of agriculture in the Seychelles can be very definitely linked to the opening of the international airport in 1971. In the 1960's about 33% of the working population worked in agriculture and 20% worked in the government sector. Fishing is still a dominant source of income although this is still, to a degree, relatively subsistence.

Living in the Seychelles provides a lifestyle and quality of living unrivalled anywhere else on earth, despite this the population is tiny. Outside of tourism the Seychelles provide very little economic opportunity for foreigners looking to set up a business. Most ex patriots are either running hotels or are retired and living the dream.

A substantial form of income for the government is the revenue generated by overseas companies that use the Seychelles as an offshore tax haven. In fact the government work hard to ensure they have a competitive edge in the world of offshore tax revenue. They have made sure that the establishment of IBC structures is easy and flexible.
