The benefits of stainless steel for pipe fittings

One of the major breakthroughs early in the 20th century was the development of stainless steel via the introduction of chromium into the alloy mix to help protect the steel from both air and water and therefore corrosion. Since then many different types of stainless steel have been developed, all of which feature prominently in the manufacture of industrial pipes and flanges.
The category of stainless steel that is used mostly in industry today is austenite stainless steel. Austenite steel is produced by combining iron with either nickel or manganese for durability, together with chromium for corrosion resistance.
Some industrial piping applications however, particularly those involving high temperatures or volatile chemicals, may require even more intense levels of durability and corrosion-resistance. These extra strength and additional anti-corrosive qualities, including protection against hard-to-detect localised corrosion or pitting, are created by adding molybdenum and nitrogen, producing what is known as super austenite stainless steel.
Super austenite stainless steel can however be expensive. An alternative stainless steel that matches the corrosion resistance and strength of super austenite stainless steel but with a lower volume of alloying elements, and therefore a lower cost base, is duplex stainless steel. The fundamental structure of duplex steel is a combination of two different crystalline iron formations, austenite and ferrite. To this combination is added chromium, molybdenum, and a small proportion of nickel.
A more sophisticated variation of duplex with added molybdenum and nickel provides even greater resistance against corrosion. This is known as super duplex steel.
Pipe fittings and flanges made from duplex and super duplex stainless steel are commonly used within a range of industrial applications including oil, gas and chemical manufacture, cooling systems, and desalination plants.
At Chemipetro we produce pipe fittings and flanges using different metals and can advise on the merits of each type for particular industrial applications. The Article is written by chemipetro.co.uk providing
