The clever Mitsubishi ASX
The ASX is Mitsubishi's interpretation of a crossover vehicle; it is based on the larger Mitsubishi Outlander but differs from it quite dramatically. Like many car manufacturers Mitsubishi has realised like people like to drive at a commanding position and like to have a car sitting higher off the ground providing off roading capabilities, even if they have no intention of off roading.
To make the ASX different from the competition Mitsubishi has been quite clever by making the ASX available as a 2 wheel drive model where only the front two wheels propel the car. This saves a lot of weight which in turns saves a lot of weight. The 2 wheel drive model weights in 300kg less than the Mitsubishi Outlander and is slightly shorter too.
The switch from 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive is not the only fuel saving initiative, the ASX also has Auto Stop & Go, electric power steering, regenerative brakes, LED lighting and low rolling resistance tyres. The Auto Stop & Go (ASG) system is fairly conventional - the engine cuts out at traffic lights, and restarts as soon as the clutch is depressed. However, in order to maintain passenger comfort, the ASG does not operate if the outside temperature falls below 3-degrees C or, if a speed of 3mph is not reached after a restart. The switch from 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive is not the only fuel saving initiative, the ASX also has Auto Stop & Go, electric power steering, regenerative brakes, LED lighting and low rolling resistance tyres.
