The function of speed drives within control systems
Modern production plants utilise high-tech, complex machinery with adjustable drive systems
. The function of these is to control the speed, velocity, torque and rotational direction of machinery. Within their operating range, an infinite number of speeds can be selected, allowing the operator to fine tune the process to a very high standard. Variable speed control systems allow operators to adapt machines for various tasks, to improve the quality of the end product, or to slow down production for safety reasons or quality control checks.
This adaptability is of particular use in machine shops. Machine tools such as lathes are used to produce a range of different sized products, often to specific criteria and in short runs. Small diameter items are run at high speed, and large diameters at low speeds, to facilitate optimum use of the cutting tools.
Printing presses also utilise variable speed. Inks, paper weight and paper coatings all affect the quality of the end product. Controlling the speed allows printing technicians to choose the speed that will give the best quality for the products they are using at the time, and means the same press can be used for many different applications. Plus, controlled acceleration allows for smooth operation of the press, which prevents breakage of the paper.
Controlled speed is also important in water supply systems. During times of low usage, pumps need only run fast enough to sustain pressure. During daytime and early evening hours, the pumps must run a lot faster to provide for the needs of residents.
The earliest adjustable drive systems were mechanically or hydraulically controlled. Today, industrial drives are electrical powered by AC or DC motors. The earliest electric control systems were DC powered. Today, AC drives have largely taken over, although DC drives remain popular.
We at Iconsys are a leading provider of variable speed DC and AC drives.
