If the move from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS in 2009 was regarded as a small step forward, then the latest advancement to the iPhone 4 can undoubtedly be regarded as one gigantic leap with not only a feature update, but a total re design, improved processor and the excellent new version 4 operating system.

Following on from the success of its recently released and very impressive iPad, Apple have taken the A4 processor used in this model and stuck it inside the iPhone 4. Whether this is the exact 1Ghz chip or a scaled down version is yet to have been revealed, but regardless the performance is frighteningly quick, and with the added facility of multi tasking now included, the new processor seems to handle it with ease. The handset also boasts 512MB of RAM, bring Apple bang into line with the majority of other high end handsets available. The A4 chip not only speeds everything up, but thanks to its improved power management coupled with the new and more efficient micro sim card that is used, Battery life has been greatly improved, much to the pleasure of previous iPhone owners. Apple are quoting that the iPhone 4 can offer users up to 7 hours of 3G talktime, or converted to standby times this figure would rise to around the 300 hour mark. These figures are reportedly a 14% increase on the 3GS. Another new addition to the internal features is a new sensor named a Gyroscope. What this does is aid the accelerometer chip by adding a further 3 axis motion control. To the user what this means is much improved gaming and augmented reality apps. As you can imagine these are few and far between at the moment but expect an influx over the coming months.

Multitasking features have been greatly expanded on the iPhone 4, now not only restricted to the in built apps but also third party apps that are downloaded. To the phone user, what this means is that you could be using an app and when you hit the home button the app no longer closes down like on previous models. What happen is the app is allowed to register a thread so it will complete the task it is currently performing. The rest of the app saves at its current point and shuts down. This is necessary to help preserve battery life. A double tap of the home button reveals a new fast app switcher interface, allowing you to reselect your most recently used programs, which will then load from their previously saved state. It all sounds very complicated but really it is not. A few hours of using the phone then not only does it become second nature, but also appears a vital aspect. The iPhone 4, thanks to features such as the new processor and very handy multitasking facilities, is set to eclipse all other handsets, despite gallant competition from the likes of HTC and Samsung, and become the phone of 2010.
