If you have an online business, it would be a very good idea for you to get some knowledge of SEO. The term SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. This is simply referring to how easy your website would be found when a customer or prospective customer search for a product or service that you offer.

The fact is that very few people go to a particular website when they open their browser, if they are searching for a particular product or service, they will tend to input a keyword (we will discuss keywords later) and select search. This is where the search engine will produce a set of pages with relevant results to the word or words searched. These results pages will have a list of websites that the searcher can choose from. Now if you are in the business of whatever it is that the searcher needs, you will want your website to appear on the first results page and you would love it even more if your website was the number one listing.

Keywords or key-phrases refer to the word or string of words that we type into the search bar of the search engine. Whatever it is that we are looking for, we will type a keyword or key-phrase that the search engine will use to find relevant websites that will more than likely meet our needs. When your website is optimised, the chances of your website appearing on the first result page will increase and the further up on that page you are, the better.

You may be wondering why it is that the front page is so important. Well the simple fact is that a customer or prospective customer will not want to spend an entire day going from website to website and searching all over the web for what he or she wants, unless it is a very rear commodity and even then, they will more than likely, select the first website that pops up. Studies have shown that 90% or more of persons who uses a search engine will never look past the first results page.

This page generally has about 10 websites that holds relevance to the keyword or phrase that was searched. The average person will click on the very first link and if they do not find what they are looking for there, they will move on to the second and then the third and so on. However, if they have checked the first five and have not found what they are looking for, they will often redefine the search with a new keyword or key-phrase. They will seldom leave the first page. It is therefore safe to say that the websites that are loaded on the first results page of a search engine are more likely to be the successful ones and as such SEO is available to help online business owners to get to that level.
