These days, many parents feel obliged to shell out hundreds of pounds on expensive toys to keep their kids happy and entertained. While there are many excellent modern toys available, they can often be so detailed that there is little room for imagination and children quickly become bored with them.

The best children's toys are usually the simplest, and are generally those which require imagination and inspire creativity. You do not have to spend a fortune on toys for your children to be happy, and one of the best ways to feed their curiosity and fuel their imagination is to keep a well-stocked children's fancy dress box.

Children love imitating adults and long to be involved in activities which make them feel more grown-up. Dressing up allows youngsters to mimic their parents and other adult role models, and plays a vital part in their personal development.

Dressing up is a fantastic way to stimulate creativity in children, as it encourages them to be resourceful and make the most of what they have. For example, a little girl might have a beautiful princess's dress in her box of costumes, but no tiara. Clearly, a princess cannot be seen without a tiara so the child feels inspired to get out the craft box and make one herself. Equally, boys love dressing up as authority figures such as police officers and firemen, but they cannot catch the baddies or put out fires without the right vehicles. So they are forced to improvise and turn cardboard boxes into fully-functioning police cars and fire engines, giving them a sense of achievement and making their playtime even more fun.

By dressing up and playing different roles, children learn to communicate with each other and gain a great deal of confidence. All they have to work with is a costume, so they have to be inventive and create their own scenarios and games. Dressing up encourages innovation and original thought at a young age, and these attributes can really help a child's development as he or she grows older.
